Marshall Park, Charlotte

Brooklyn was the center of Black life in Charlotte — churches, businesses, schools and homes — until mid-century urban renewal cleared it. Second Ward High School, the city's first public high school for Black students, was demolished in the process. What replaced it was government buildings, parking and open space, including this park.

The Levine Museum of the New South in First Ward and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Carolina Room hold the primary record; read them before drawing conclusions from anything written about the ward today.

Marshall Park has long functioned as a lawn-and-pond green serving the government and convention blocks, used for gatherings, lunch breaks and demonstrations rather than as a programmed event venue.

Second Ward is the quadrant with the most open development capacity inside the loop, which is exactly why it carries the most uncertainty for buyers. A view today is not necessarily a view in five years, and adjacency to a planned parcel is a material fact rather than a footnote.
