The Uptown Charlotte map: the grid, the loop and the four wards

Charlotte's street grid inside Uptown is laid out from the crossing of Trade Street (running roughly east–west) and Tryon Street (running roughly north–south), a crossing point that dates to the city's founding in 1768 and is marked today by Independence Square. Streets radiating from that intersection are generally named for compass direction plus number — North Tryon, East Trade, South College, and so on — which makes an address a reliable clue to which quadrant it sits in.

The grid is tight and largely rectilinear in the core, which is part of why the walk from block to block feels short even though the district holds a genuinely large amount of building floor area.

Interstate 277, paired with sections of US-74, forms a loop that encircles Uptown and functions as its practical boundary. The loop is depressed below street grade for much of its run, which is why crossing it on foot feels different from crossing an ordinary street — see the walkability page for detail on those crossings.

Everything inside the loop is considered Uptown; everything just outside it belongs to the surrounding neighborhoods — South End to the south, Elizabeth and Midtown to the east, NoDa and the North End area to the north, and Wesley Heights and Fourth Ward's western edge toward the west.

Independence Square splits Uptown into four quadrants, each named a 'ward' after Charlotte's original 19th-century municipal wards: First Ward to the northeast, Second Ward to the southeast, Third Ward to the southwest, and Fourth Ward to the northwest. The boundaries are not perfectly symmetric blocks — they follow historical lines more than a clean compass grid — but the northeast/southeast/southwest/northwest orientation is the reliable shorthand.

In First Ward: First Ward Park, Discovery Place Science, UNC Charlotte Center City and the 7th Street Public Market cluster along North Tryon and North College. In Second Ward: the Charlotte Convention Center, the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Spectrum Center sit near East Trade and Stonewall Street, with Marshall Park and the Brooklyn Village site nearby.

In Third Ward: Romare Bearden Park, Truist Field and the Levine Center for the Arts sit toward South Tryon and South Church, with Bank of America Stadium a short walk further southwest. In Fourth Ward: the Fourth Ward historic district's Victorian streets and small park squares sit above West Trade toward North Graham, with the established residential towers along its eastern edge closest to the Tryon core.

If you are visiting for stadium or arena events, orient around Third and Second Ward. If parks and newer residential product matter most, orient around First Ward.
