What counts as a source
Preference runs, in order: the government body that maintains the record; the institution that operates the thing being described; a recognized archive; and only then reputable secondary coverage.
For Uptown that means Mecklenburg County's POLARIS parcel system and tax records for property facts, the City of Charlotte for zoning and streets, CATS for transit, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for assignment, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission and the Carolina Room for history, and the operating institutions themselves for venues and museums.
- Government records first
- Operating institutions for their own facilities
- Recognized archives for historical claims
- Secondary coverage only where no primary record exists
