Things to do in Uptown Charlotte

Start in Fourth Ward, where restored Victorian houses, Fourth Ward Park and Settlers Cemetery form the only nineteenth-century streetscape left inside the loop. Walk east to First Ward Park and the 7th Street Public Market for coffee and provisions.

This half of the loop is quiet before ten, which is exactly when it photographs best against the towers.

The Levine Center for the Arts holds Mint Museum Uptown, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and the Harvey B. Gantt Center within one block. Two of the three fit comfortably into an afternoon.

With children, substitute Discovery Place Science in First Ward, which absorbs a full half-day on its own.

Second Ward carries the NASCAR Hall of Fame beside the Convention Center, and the Brooklyn story — the Black neighborhood cleared by mid-century urban renewal — told through markers and the Levine Museum's regional history programming.

It is the part of Uptown where the city is most visibly still deciding what it will become.

Nights inside the loop belong to Blumenthal Performing Arts on North Tryon, the Hornets or a concert at Spectrum Center, the Knights at Truist Field in summer, or Panthers and Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium.

Uptown is unusually generous with free experiences: the four parks, the Fourth Ward walk, public art at Independence Square, the Overstreet Mall skywalk network, and the market hall itself cost nothing to visit.

Several museums also run free or reduced-admission evenings; confirm the current schedule with each institution.

The Overstreet Mall connects a significant portion of the office core by second-level walkways, letting you cross much of the Tryon spine without going outside.

Combined with the Gold Line streetcar, it makes Uptown one of the easier American downtowns to enjoy in bad weather.
