Fourth Ward is the northwest quadrant — above West Trade, left of North Tryon — and it is the only place inside the loop where Uptown still looks nineteenth century at street level. A block of restored Victorian houses with deep porches and iron fences sits directly beneath fifty-story residential glass, and the collision is the whole point.
The ward's revival began in the 1970s, when a coalition of preservationists, the city and lenders rescued a decayed district from demolition by renovating houses one at a time. That effort produced Charlotte's most successful historic neighborhood and set the template for the condominium towers that later filled the surrounding blocks.
For residents, Fourth Ward offers the deepest bench of established condominium buildings in Uptown, the best tree cover, and the shortest walk to the Tryon Street office core. It is the quietest of the four wards after dark and the most conventionally residential.

Fourth Ward has the deepest and oldest condominium inventory in Uptown: 1980s and 1990s mid-rises, 2000s high-rises, and a small number of single-family historic houses that almost never trade.
Because the buildings are older, association finances and capital planning matter more here than anywhere else in Uptown. Well-run associations with funded reserves and completed façade or elevator programs trade at a clear premium over neighbors with special assessments pending.

Fourth Ward is the ward where people walk dogs at seven in the morning and know each other's names. Weekday mornings are a five-minute commute on foot into the tower core; evenings are porches, the park loop and dinner three blocks south.
